When I was a kid I stayed at a friend’s house for the 2020 NBA All Star Chicago shirt. My friend’s mother was one of those parents who, at the dinner table, required their kids to eat everything on their plate come hell or high water. I had been served way too much food, and said that I can’t eat it all. The mother said to me, “you can either finish your food or leave the table.” I promptly left the table. This totally blew the minds of my friend and his siblings. It had never occurred to them that leaving the table was actually a viable option. When my mother picked me up the next day, my friend’s mother told her what had happened and said I was the rudest little boy. I think my mother was actually quite proud of me.

My partner had this, he wasn’t allowed to get down from table unless he had finished and remembers once sat alone at the table while the rest of 2020 NBA All Star Chicago shirt. Terrible really. I never had this from my folks. I remember a family reunion thing and an aunt had cooked this disgusting stew of chewy meat, and even then I didn’t like meat (opted to be veggie aged 8 back in early 90s when there was not much vegetarian options) and I couldn’t physically eat it. So I didn’t and the other adults were being a bit rude an telling me to finish my food and luckily my dad just ate it off my plate and ended the conversation. Remembered feeling so relieved, like, what were they gonna say or do to that! Now when my kids say they don’t like something or are full I just say “no dessert/pudding then” and if they say fine, then that’s the end of the matter. If they were being awkward or lazy they will eat some more. We don’t have long winded angry dinners and they have good relationships with food. If I make a totally new dish from a recipe and they genuinely give it a try but don’t like it and are upset at the thought of still being hungry I’ll let them have a cheese toastie after or something, but mostly they enjoy new foods.
