One of the craziest things was we went out of town for a few days for a very much needed 4th of July Dachshund, Dog Bless America Doxie shirt so I switched over to asynchronous. I told the teacher we would watch the videos and take pictures of her school work and the teacher said that wasn’t even necessary. I really don’t know what is the point of having the kids do all the school work if the teachers aren’t actually doing anything with it. My kid has filled up a whole math book of worksheets and it’s great that she’s learning things but it just feels like such a waste that she’s having to spend hours doing these scripted lessons when there’s no accountability from teachers to actually look at her work

PREACH. I get that maybe re-opening schools safely in person isn’t possible right now, but trying to justify that virtual 4th of July Dachshund, Dog Bless America Doxie shirt can be a viable stand-in for actual school (esp for the youngest kids) is just insane. My 2nd grader seems more and more like a middle-aged burnt out cubicle worker because of the amount of busywork and screen-time she has to do… and I hate that when I watch the BOE meetings (#nerdalert) they reiterate that this is all in the name of equity. My kids are neurotypical kids with parents at home and are still struggling like crazy. It’s like MCPS is focused only on ticking academic checkboxes while downplaying the very real and damaging circumstances many at risk students live in on a daily basis. In the absence of the critical resources these students receive at school – safe spaces, healthcare, and advocacy among the most important – the expectation that they are able to appear daily in front of a computer “ready to learn” feels so absurdly out of touch.
