Come on guys. I understand the sentiment and I want to give non power 5 teams a Bus Crazy People Magnet Shirt. But College football has a system where the vast majority of teams don’t play each other and schedules are wildly different. You have to compensate. Do you really think Coastal, who should have lost to Troy, is better than Florida? Do you seriously think Cincannati that got blown out by 40 by OSU last year can now beat them? The committee is instructed to pick what it thinks are the 4 best teams. It’s an impossible task, but these group of 5 arguments to me are just silly. Unless Coastal beats all of its way inferior opponents by double digits they can’t expect to complete. They should expand the playoff and give those teams a shot.

The fundamental problem with the modern playoff system is the same its always been in the Bus Crazy People Magnet Shirt. We are deciding a champion in a boardroom rather than on the field. The FBS will never be in a good place until a champion is declared on the field. We can have a playoff system that emphasizes having good SOS but if teams in weaker conferences have no chance of succeeding then the system is not designed to crown a true champion.

8 team playoff with the 5 P5 conference champs, highest-ranked G5, and Bus Crazy People Magnet Shirt (with the caveat that no conference can have more than 2 teams) is ideal IMO. I don’t think that would need any changes to the regular season with that format. Expanding to 16 teams would mean removing a regular season game or conference championships, and I think that would mess with schedules too much for the people in power to agree to without at least first seeing how an 8 team playoff does.
