I’m so so sorry but that is so not ok. The purpose of an IV is so we can administer an anaesthetic drug beforehand. Everything hurts and you want me to smile fibromyalgia awareness shirt agents like lethabarb are what we call necrotising, and if given in any way other than intravenously it can be quite painful to the surrounding tissue. By placing an IV you guarantee venous access to ensure every last drop goes into the vein and not the surrounding tissue. The very definition of euthanasia comes from ‘eu’ meaning good, and ‘thanatos’ the god of a peaceful death. Gold standard euthanasia should be done in a way that the pet does not feel it happening, nor feel stress prior to it happening. Hence the anaesthetic drug beforehand. If a vet is providing anything but a peaceful passing as their euthanasia service, they should absolutely be held accountable for their inadequate standard of practice.

Oh wow no. My idiot cat hurt himself a couple of weeks into lockdown and I had to go to the vets to get Everything hurts and you want me to smile fibromyalgia awareness shirt . The carpark for the vets is in front of the building and when I got there, there was a couple standing by their car and the vet was just coming out carrying a dog with a very long IV attached – I realised that they were about to put the dog to sleep and because of lockdown the owners weren’t allowed inside so they were doing it in the carpark. I tried to stay out of their way and kept my back turned but I could hear it all. The vet was so patient and kind and was obviously very upset to be doing this in the car park. I still get emotional thinking about it, but that vet was so present with the owners and using the long tube he was able to stand back and allow the owners to be with the dog while he quietly administered the drugs. It was really a lesson in kindness and compassion, even in the chaos that was that first lockdown.
