I genuinely wonder how many people watched Guzan in that 18 or so months when he was If my personalities offend you Im sure one of them can tell you where to go shirt– his shot stopping was superb during that period but throughout, his distribution was absolutely shocking. He (and a number of other senior players) played a huge part in why we got relegated too. There tends to be a weird view on Reddit which is I think USA-heavy in support (and especially ) that he was some goalkeeping behemoth and it quite often talked about in the same category as Friedel. Friedel was so far apart in terms of quality and leadership they may as well have been playing different sports.

That’s a bit much… Just because I said he was class for a few seasons doesn’t mean I equate him with If my personalities offend you Im sure one of them can tell you where to go shirt and think he’s a goalkeeping behemoth. You’re right, his distribution was shocking and he would oftentimes flap at chances, but he was a classy shot stopper at his peak and we were much more confident with him in goal than any of those which came after him, until Heaton/Martinez. I don’t agree with the assertion that a player is either complete garbage or absolute class either. It’s possible for a player to be both over the years. Guzan was great for two seasons, then fell off massively. Hutton was complete garbage under Eck, bombed out by Lambert, forced his way back into the team a year later, and retired a fan favorite. Gabby looked like he was going to be the future England number 9 under MON, but was hilariously bad for us after Lambert’s first season, etc.
