I think it’s often the most appropriate gift and very much appreciated. I think of one of our grandsons who wanted a Laken Tomlinson Lift Heavy Pet Dogs Shirt from a very well-known teen kind of store. We didn’t even know there was such a store, let alone what on earth was popular there. I know we looked way out of place when we walked in – clearly not a 70-something place. We looked and looked and looked for a shirt that would be warm for school and that we thought would be just the thing. It turns out it wasn’t what he had been hoping for and yet he very nicely asked us if he could possibly exchange it. We made sure he had enough to get what he wanted (we had found the sale rack) and he exchanged it. I think in such a case money would have been just fine. BTW, the day we went shopping to find exactly that store was a brutally cold, snowy day in MN and we had to park quite a ways away. He and his brother got money after that. I also was a divorced mom with two young girls and I appreciated money a lot, sometimes just to buy basic food, etc.

Imagine that there’s something you don’t believe. For instance, picture a Laken Tomlinson Lift Heavy Pet Dogs Shirt where you don’t believe in Santa Claus. Then imagine someone asked a similar question of you: If you as a non-Santa believer felt you had been given certain proof that Santa is real, would you accept that or look for loopholes in the proof? Um…what? “Loopholes in the proof?” What kind of proof is being presented? The wording makes it sound like one of the many, many failed proofs for the existence for Santa, the type that 5-year-olds try to use to make 10-year-olds believe, but always unsuccessfully. If Santa’s not real, then how do you explain the fact that there are presents? or If Santa’s not real, how can you explain how so many people believe in him? As an adult, of course, you understand these things not to be proof at all. You recognize them for the bad arguments there are. Then you seriously consider what it would take to make you believe, for realsies, in Santa Claus. Not some historical guy, but a present day North-Pole-living, elf-employing, made-in-China-toy-purveying, magical-reindeer-driving Santa Claus. Your mind boggles. Certainly seeing an old man in a suit wouldn’t be sufficient. I’m not sure what would, right off, numerous Christmas movies notwithstanding. Honestly, if you saw a guy in a Santa suit jump into a sleigh and watched his reindeer fly away, would you think “Well, guess I was wrong and Santa is real,” or would you think that just maybe your eyes had played tricks on you? Because we know that one of those things is entirely possible. The other one, not so much.

Tom Riddle’s body was a lifeless husk. The elder wand was snapped. Molly Weasley was weeping in the Great Hall. Petunia crunched up the walk in her sensible running shoes, a hand on the pepper spray in her purse just in case. She didn’t use it on any stray Death Eaters, but she almost used it on the exultant crowd she found gathering around Harry, trespassing into his personal space as though something good might rub off on them. Harry didn’t push, because the boy only pushed for other people. Petunia could be other people; she waded through the crowd and dragged Harry off to someplace where he could sit and shake and nibble on the chocolate she’d dragged out of her purse.
