My nana’s first husband and fist/only love was a general In the mad happy local optimist group shirt. She was Irish and 18 and he was from the north of England and in his late 20’s. They met and married fast, they were madly in love and he converted to Catholicism for her. They were married for only 6 days when he was deployed and instantly gunned down parachuting over France. She never recovered from the pain of loosing him. She did marry my grandad a few years later and had 6 kids (my mum the youngest) but she become very mentally ill and died when my mum was 14. My grandad was always madly in love with her from what I know but she never got over her first husband and had a hard time as a mother and a wife. My grandad is dead now and we are in Canada but my mum recently came across his WW2 medals (Parachute death, first hubs) so my mum plans on taking his medals to his grave site in France after the pandemic is over. She can’t explain why but she has a strong unexplained urge to do this and has been having weird dreams about it. Not the most exciting story but a heartbreaking one.

My grandpa was shot down while flying over Germany. He spent 9 months in a mad happy local optimist group shirt. All I know is he had his tailbone broken and that he was forced to march for miles in the cold. That’s all he told us. But in the last few months of his life as he slowly lost his mind, he’d wake up screaming saying he was ‘trying to hide from the Germans.’ We’ll never know what really happened. Breaks my heart to think about what he must have gone through.

My great grandfather was in an airplane flying over Germany when the plane he was in mad happy local optimist group shirt. He was able to eject himself from the plane and deploy his parachute, but as he was landing his parachute got stuck in a tree and he was unable to free himself. Members of the Nazi party stumbled upon him and he was taken to a work camp in Germany where he spent 8 months. His wife and children received a letter saying that he was presumed dead. Eventually, him and another prisoner in the camp created an elaborate plan and somehow managed to successfully escape. He made it home to his family, and my grandmother says she still remembers the day that he came back home and clutched her in his arms. I was lucky enough to meet him early in my life. We called him Grandpa Soldier.
