We did not evolve for savant-like abilities. For that to happen, “savantism” would have to be an inheritable trait. We evolved for high intelligence, with a Miggy T Shirt emphasis on three things: brain plasticity, symbolic thought, and modeling the personalities of other human being. Plasticity is the basis for learning, the most basic layer of which is the neurological reshaping of the brain to get better at certain tasks. Savantism is probably an accident. It’s what happens when a developmental problem or injury keeps the brain from devoting resources to modeling other human personalities. This makes people bad at reading other people’s emotions and interacting socially, but it also frees up a lot of attention for symbolic thinking. If you do much less of some things and much more of another, your brain will devote more and more neurons and connections to what you actually do, reshaping itself accordingly. Severely autistic savants are at the extreme edge of this, but even an injury that knocks out the emotional processing and psychological modeling behavior of the brain can allow seemingly superhuman concentration on symbol manipulation.

They made Miggy T Shirt an extremely disappointing offer. As I recall it was something like 90k salary and 30k stock options. For a Round A startup with 10 employees and no engineers, that was way below market. I still wonder why the offer was so low. They may simply have not made an engineering offer before, and so weren’t aware of where the market was at for a seasoned internet programmer with 5+ years of experience. Had I accepted the offer, I think I would have been their first engineering hire, but the stock option package was so disappointing the company never would have made me wealthy, even as the first engineering hire.

The Vietnamese were hardly “innocents”, but if we’re splitting moral hairs, the USA was by far the Miggy T Shirt “in the wrong.” There’s almost no disputing that fact any more. So, when the moral impetus of a war is in dispute, it gets a LOT of focus from the press and those prosecuting that war tend to get exposed much more rapidly for their wrongdoing. This is NOT to say that most or even a large percentage of American soldiers/marines were doing evil. They weren’t. They were young men caught up in a political war who were passionate about serving their country and doing good. That “good” was used, by politicians for very bad reasons and it’s a shame because they deserved better and even more horrifically, those men came home and were treated like shit by their nation. A Joint naval force of British, Dutch (exiled free Dutch forces) and American warships operated a blockade against Japan from July 1941 onwards as part of a sanctions action over the Rape of Nanking. The outrage over Japan’s slaughter of 380,000 Chinese civilians sheltering in the walled city in 1937 was quite genuine.

By the time I realized how distressed the war survivor was, we were starting the Miggy T Shirt cake routine. I could only imagine the horrors the objecting father had lived through, with his home village destroyed in the violence he’d survived. That man had a Ph.D. in some kind of engineering and was married to a nationally recognized, award-winning journalist. He had two beautiful children and lived in a charming hilltop home he’d personally remodeled. His life was full and rich. Yet, the pain he carried ran deep and was ever present. I don’t think the other fathers or the children ever realized what was going on with that. That father was a tall, rugged “man’s man,” seemingly, but he had a deep sensitivity as well. Once, knowing he felt comfortable around livestock, I asked him to hold my horned goat while I trimmed her hooves. As I trimmed close to the blood supply but not too close, he became nervous, imploring me to take her to the “hospital” if I was going to cut more. That surprised me, but I appreciated his acute concern for our pet goat.

My ex had an incredible birthday party once on a Miggy T Shirt, all done by surprise by her father, and it involved us going out to sea with a full catering team and a fireworks display which I was a bit nervous about at first considering if anything went wrong we’d be stranded, but it was phenomenal. No light pollution and the reflections at night were just superb in adding to the atmosphere. We’d gone to her father’s boat expecting to have a meal and then go out for the evening together, but when we got there, we were immediately served with drinks and aperitifs by very smartly dressed caterers. They all began singing happy birthday and we realised they weren’t just caterers, they were a harmonising acapella group who personalised the song way beyond the standard words and made it extremely relevant to her and what she was doing in life at the time.
