The My Vp Looks Like Me T-Shirts delay can be solved by just shortening service to one year. Get rid of the useless command schools and let regulars take charge. Giving nsfs the power to tekan and the responsibility of their men was a fucking terrible idea. The issue of saf’s inefficiency is completely unrelated to female conscription. You can have female conscription and still seek to reduce inefficiency in the SAF at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive. Nobody cares about how inefficient the SAF is when only men are conscripted but now that people want women to be conscripted it’s an issue?

Here’s what the My Vp Looks Like Me T-Shirts for Community Development said in 1996. I think it’s safe to say that many in Parliament still feel this way. This is the biggest reason why female conscription isn’t a thing yet. Men in sg like to infantilize women and have a savior complex. They can’t imagine a society where women are able to fend for themselves. And for these chauvinists NS is the last form of superiority they can claim over women.

I actually concur with the My Vp Looks Like Me T-Shirts of shortening service time! It is funny because I brought it up with Ng Eng Hen when he visited my university for a dialogue session. The answer he gave was a generic one, stating that people need time to be trained to obtain skill sets of reasonable level and that MINDEF has already shortened NS recently. The issue of inefficiency was brought up because I believe it is relevant. By forcing conscription of women, we are effectively doubling the number of NSFs. Yes, the two things (efficiency and women’s conscription) are not mutually exclusive but they will ultimately be linked to one another. With our army’s track record, is that a risk that you are willing to take and ultimately, pay for? The point about infantilizing women … That was from a different time? I respectfully disagree with everything in that paragraph but I will not deny that men in the past may have thought like that. All I can put forth is that I have never met anybody who felt the same way as you among my peers.
