I haven’t read them all, but Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Diververse novels and short stories have a lot of female protags and I don’t remember a love story even as a She’s A Good Girl Loves Jesus Loves Her Dog And America Too Shirt. Up Against It by M.J. Locke has a female protag who is very much in love with her husband, but their relationship is not central to the story and it would probably have all worked the same if she were single. I just finished my reread of Gibson’s Count Zero and I was struck by how there was a female protag and three other very important female characters and none of them were in a romantic relationship, other than a passing reference about one of them at the very end. These are just three highly acclaimed examples from science fiction off the top of my head.

Oh god yes. I’m a guy who loves sci-fi and fantasy and please save me from yet another story where a young boy goes out and She’s A Good Girl Loves Jesus Loves Her Dog And America Too Shirt the world with his big weapon. In my opinion sexism and outdated biases have become encoded into standard story tropes and they need excising pronto. So yes write women who aren’t pining for a man, and definitely not a woman who has to be twice as tough just to be treated equally as it’s a mans world dontcha know cupcake. If you can write a story that is not driven by this, it will be relatable for all readers, and perhaps a little bit more novel and interesting. Please please do it!
