I was super devout. Like, Ned Flanders might tell me I should cool it with the God stuff. I went on a bunch of Sloth face mask I turned in quarantine shirt in high school (not bullshit short-term missions for a facebook picture (also pre-social-networks), but usually like half the summer and often to an impoverished place in the US). The missionary who was basically my mentor and most of his friends and family all went to the same Christian college. These are people who I still, after having lost my faith, have tons of respect for. They really live their life how one should if they believe that they’re supposed to be acting like Jesus. The impression they made on me shaped my choice of school for undergrad. I met my wife at that school.

I luckily only minored in Bible (also a choice shaped by this missionary – I told him I don’t think I can handle the pressure of Sloth face mask I turned in quarantine shirt for a congregation and making my career about Christianity and he eased that concern for me by pointing out that a ton of the team on our mission are engineers, accountants, etc. so you don’t have to make your career about it to make your life about it). I kept my faith until my mid-30s when other unrelated events happened that kinda shattered the emotional lens through which I viewed Christianity and scripture and once you see it as bullshit you can’t make it go back the other way.
