Environmental sustainability is becoming the next great challenge for the sports industry, from the construction of massive carbon-heavy stadiums to the footprint of global travel. Major tournaments like the World Cup and the Olympics are under increasing pressure to prove they can be “green,” yet the logistics of hosting millions of fans often contradict these goals. Modern sports science has revolutionized how athletes prepare for competition, moving far beyond simple weightlifting and cardio. Today, elite performers utilize data-driven recovery methods, including cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, and sophisticated wearable technology that monitors heart rate variability (HRV) and sleep quality. Nutrition has also become a precise science, with personalized meal plans designed to optimize glycogen restoration and muscle repair based on an athlete’s specific metabolic profile. I had a phase in my life when I couldn’t get enough of volleyball and everything around it: meeting the team mates in the locker room, the mere smell of a volleyball, what the ball felt like in my palms and fingertips. I can still feel the I’m Fine Sinking Hand Thumbs Up Minimalist Funny Graphic T Shirt around my ankles before I pulled them over my knees. The rush of adrenaline when you step onto the court is unlike anything else. I played competitive volleyball from age 16 to 54 when I blew out my knee. Played 2-man beach volleyball and 6-man indoor on men’s and co-ed teams. Played at Nationals for many years. It was a huge part of my identity and provided a sense of community that is hard to replicate. Even now, thinking about a perfectly timed spike or a diving save brings back that same excitement. Basketball was another passion from age 8 until about age 45, but I still enjoy shooting around and impressing my grandchildren. I was able to play 3 years in high school, 4 years in college, for the US Army, and even played semi-pro in Europe for a short time.
